Bio

Hi there! My name is John Sandercock, an award-winning video editor, writer, and videographer who loves telling stories through media! I've had the pleasure of working on a plethora of content, including social media, corporate, training/instructional, short films, and much more! My diverse skillset also includes VFX & 3D modeling, motion graphics, radio & livestream hosting and live/pre-taped content. Prior to my professional career, I was doing video editing, audio mixing, and photoshopping for eleven years.

One of the things I love most about content creation is being able to capture the essence of a story and use creative techniques to elevate the final product! I’ve also dabbled in writing, coding, and more!

Recent Creative Projects

My Absurd Obsession: The runner-up in the 2024 Calgary Underground Film Festival’s 48 hour film challenge. In addition to being the main video editor, I also helped write, film and narrate the short.

The Lost Marianas: A 30 minute short film that was an honourable mention at the 2022 Student World Impact Film Festival. I wrote, directed, puppeteered, editing, special effects, and 3D modeling for the production.

The Erased DJ Is Crying For Help: Screened at Otafest 2023. An Anime Music Video (AMV) that combines edited scenes from the anime Erased with AJR’s “The DJ Is Crying For Help.“

Sundance College

During my time at Sundance College, I've had the opportunity to edit a plethora of student course videos, in addition to several front-facing videos, such as the 2023 Calgary graduation. In addition to the editing and colour correction, I was also operating a gimbal throughout the duration of the shoot.

I also have edited a variety of the content filmed into condensed versions for Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and other social media platforms. A selection of these videos can be viewed below.

“Highland Impact Puppets” YouTube Channel

For over a decade, I have been running the “Highland Impact Puppets“ YouTube channel for Highland MB Church’s puppet troupe. Each video presents a unique creative challenge, ranging from basic edits, filming, VFX, green screen shoots, 360 degree video, writing, 3D models, and so much more! Below are a few highlights from the playlist…:

Creature: Combining photogrammetry, hand-adjustments, and a water simulation to create the digital set, this song by half•alive also features motion graphics to communicate the story.

Christmas, Reporting: Co-written with Michael Sandercock, this play simulates a fictional newscast surrounding the events of Jesus’ birth. It involved a two-stage setup, puppeteers playing multiple roles (including myself), and a quick turnaround to ensure the video was aired before Christmas.

The B-I-B-L-E: Currently the highest viewed video on the channel, the song combines motion graphic animations and a familiar yet catchy Sunday School tune stylized to look like a ‘90s music video.

Shelter: A Christian parody of the song "Shelter" by Porter Robinson. The voice was created using SynthV, a Vocaloid-like program that emulates a humanoid voice based on note and lyric programming. In addition to writing lyrics and inputting the vocals, I also did the puppeteering and created the environment using Blender and a few add-ons.

What A Glorious Night/Mary: In conclusion to our massive 2020 lineup, I choreographed a large 30 minute play that included four songs. With lockdown restrictions, the entire production, including the actors lines, were done asynchronously.

Training Videos Demo Reel

During a 4-month internship, I served as the editor on a series of 10 training videos. This included assembling original and stock videos, creating graphical overlays, and 3D models/animations in a cohesive, on-brand manner. Here are some highlights of the best edits (used with permission, of course).

CMRU 4th Year Project Showcase

To celebrate all the hard work from 4th year Broadcasting students, Ryan Yip and myself teamed up to create an 8 hour long livestream with everyone's projects. We collaborated to schedule guests, create custom stream graphics, and develop a final product that celebrated our class's hard work!

”Genre-Ally Speaking” Season One Air-Check

An air check for the first season of the radio show I co-hosted on CMRU.ca that focused on exploring a different genre of music (along the latest pop culture trends, video game announcements, and news) every week. Genre-ally Speaking aired from January-April 2019.

Voice Acting Demo Reel

This is a demo reel showing some of the different voices I can do.

3D

To accomplish the "digital" feel for my short film "The Lost Marianas", I created two separate 3D sets. Pictures 1 & 2 show the Datastream, an environment with the camera on a virtual track, complete with coloured lights, text, edited video inserted using the Images As Planes Blender add-on and a particle system for the capacitors.

Images 3-5 show the Marianas Web set. To accomplish actors appearing in VR, video planes were stored beneath the scene, then keyframed to be level with the camera during their playback.
